During our grammar lessons in class we've been looking at verbs. Personally I find them one of the easiest parts of speech to teach to young children because they are types of words children can relate to. What five and six year old doesn't like to move?
Picking the action word or the verb out of simple sentence is a good place to start when teaching verbs to preschoolers. Here you can see some of our sentences from last year that we identified the verb on our IWB after introducing the concept in earlier lessons. From there, I like to have the children write and draw their own simple sentence about something they can do. We after sharing our sentences in class, we then use different media to recreate their piece of writing. Last year we used florist wire to create ourselves doing the same thing that they wrote about. This student wrote about jumping.
This year with a new class of students we did our writing/drawing of verbs and then made Plasticine models of ourselves doing the same. I love the amount of detail included in their creations. Another year we made and used salt dough to create our verb sculptures.
